Why does the prefix "per-" sometimes mean "against" or "away"?

Main Post:

I am currently working on one of the meanings of the prefix "per". My question lies in understanding how "per" conveys meanings related to "against" or "away", as apposed to completeness or thoroughness, as seen in words like "perjury". How does the meaning of completeness and thoroughness evolve with the meaning of "against" and "away"?

Other examples: perversion, perfidious.

Top Comment: The per- group is loosely about going "through" something, over time and sometimes continuously. Think persist, pertain, and permanent. The more negative senses aren't about going through things quietly over time, but instead going through or beyond the normal limits of the idea. In a rough sense, the difference between "I have been with the company through the years" and "I have accidentally put my hand through the drywall." There's a lot of semantic nuances, but *per- isn't negative in itself, just in contexts when the type of change/"forward movement" described is considered negative.

Must I use "as" with "per" to mean "in accordance with", or can I cut that shit and just say Per. Without the "as" on it, per my last sentence.

Top Comment: You can just say "per". The "as" is totally redundant, and doesn't carry any meaning.

PER vs PEA

Main Post:

Hello,

I regularly see comments about the "nonsense" of investing in a PER (Plan d'Epargne Retraite) rather than a PEA (Plan d'Epargne en Actions), especially if one does not anticipate a change in marginal tax rate at retirement.

Beyond the constraints of the PER, if I stick strictly to the calculations:

  • PER: I invest €4400 in year 1, at 7.5% (8% - 0.5% management fees) over 30 years, I obtain €35,834. If I deduct 30% in taxes, I obtain €25,084,
  • PEA: I invest €3080 in year 1 (€4400 - 30% taxes), at 8% for 30 years, I obtain €28,697. If I deduct 17.2% in social security contributions, I obtain €24,518.

I readily understand that the gain is marginal considering the constraints of the PER vs PEA. However, if I stick strictly to the figures, there is a real gain.

What parameter(s) am I forgetting in my calculation?

Top Comment: The exit conditions for the PER. Let's say the government announces the end of the PFU, a change in taxation, etc., we can assume that not only for the PEA will it not be retroactive, but you can also decide to leave before the law is implemented and purge your PV. The PER, no, and the taxation will impact not just the PV but also the capital that has not been taxed. So roughly speaking with a PER you have a very high exposure to future taxation which historically has only gone up.
